Meat Lovers Pizza Soup

If there's one thing I enjoy, it's taking a familiar dish and turning it into something completely different without losing the flavors that made it popular in the first place.

And that's exactly what I'm doing with this Meat Lovers Pizza Soup.

Now, I'm a big fan of a good meat lovers pizza. Give me some Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon, plenty of cheese, and a flavorful tomato sauce, and I'm good.

But I started thinking, what if I could take everything I enjoy about a meat lovers pizza and turn it into a hearty bowl of soup?

That's where this recipe comes in.

And let me tell you, this one delivers.

What makes this soup special is that I'm not just throwing a bunch of pizza toppings into tomato broth. I'm actually building layers of flavor, starting with the meats.

First, I cook the bacon until it's nice and crispy. That gives me the smoky, savory flavor that makes bacon such a great pizza topping.

Then I crisp up the pepperoni.

Now, this is something I definitely recommend doing because cooking the pepperoni before adding it to the soup brings out more of its flavor and gives the edges a slightly crispy texture.

Next comes the Italian sausage.

I brown the sausage in the same pot, breaking it into smaller pieces as it cooks. The sausage adds that familiar Italian seasoning flavor that you expect from a good meat lovers pizza.

Once the sausage is browned, I add some chopped onions and green bell peppers.

These two ingredients might seem simple, but they bring another layer of pizza flavor to the soup.

After the vegetables soften, it's time to build the tomato base.

I add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef bone broth, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and a little sugar to balance the acidity.

The beef bone broth adds a savory depth to the tomato base, while the Worcestershire sauce gives it another layer of richness.

Then I let everything simmer so those flavors can come together.

What I really like about this recipe is that you don't have to spend hours in the kitchen to get a satisfying result.

Once the soup has simmered, I spoon it into a bowl and finish it with the crispy pepperoni, bacon, shredded mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.

And this is where it really starts looking like pizza in a bowl.

As the cheese begins melting into the hot tomato broth, you get that familiar combination of tomato sauce, Italian meats, and gooey cheese.

Every spoonful gives you something different.

You might get a little Italian sausage in one bite, some smoky bacon in the next, and then a piece of pepperoni covered in melted cheese.

And because this soup is packed with meat, it's hearty enough to serve as a complete meal.

You can enjoy it just as it is, or serve it with garlic bread, breadsticks, or a simple side salad.

Personally, I think some toasted garlic bread would be perfect for dipping into that flavorful tomato broth.

This is also a great recipe for those evenings when you want something comforting but don't feel like making an entire pizza.

You get those same familiar flavors in a dish that's easy to prepare and even easier to enjoy.

So, if you're looking for a different way to enjoy pizza night, give this Meat Lovers Pizza Soup a try.

Because sometimes, you don't need the crust to enjoy everything you love about pizza.

With three different meats, this soup is hearty, satisfying, and full of savory flavor.

Recipe Variations

1. Supreme Pizza Soup

Add sliced mushrooms, black olives, and additional bell peppers.

This version gives you the flavors of a supreme pizza in soup form.

2. Spicy Meat Lovers Pizza Soup

Use hot Italian sausage and add:

  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

You can also add sliced jalapeños for additional heat.

3. Extra Cheesy Pizza Soup

Increase the mozzarella cheese to 1½ cups and add ½ cup shredded provolone cheese.

This creates an even cheesier pizza-inspired soup.

4. Meatball Pizza Soup

Replace the ground Italian sausage with small Italian meatballs.

Brown the meatballs before adding them to the soup and simmer until fully cooked.

5. Creamy Meat Lovers Pizza Soup

Stir in ½ cup heavy cream during the final few minutes of cooking.

This creates a richer tomato broth with a smoother consistency.

6. Low-Carb Meat Lovers Pizza Soup

The original recipe contains no pasta or pizza crust, making it a lower-carb alternative to traditional pizza.

For a version with less added sugar, omit the sugar or use a suitable alternative.

7. Loaded Pizza Soup

Add:

  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms
  • ¼ cup sliced black olives
  • ½ cup diced red bell pepper
  • ½ cup shredded provolone cheese

This variation is perfect for people who enjoy pizza with plenty of toppings.

8. Pizza Pasta Soup

Add 1 cup of small pasta, such as ditalini or elbow macaroni, along with additional broth.

Simmer until the pasta is tender.

This creates a heartier pizza-inspired pasta soup.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground Italian sausage
  • 3 oz sliced pepperoni
  • 3 oz chopped bacon
  • 1 medium yellow onion chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 can 28 oz diced tomatoes
  • 1 can 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef bone broth
  • 2½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Before cooking, prepare the ingredients. Chop 3 ounces of bacon. Cut 3 ounces of pepperoni slices in half. Dice 1 medium yellow onion. Dice 1 medium green bell pepper. Measure the seasonings, broth, tomato sauce, and cheese. Having everything prepared makes the cooking process easier.
  • Place a large 6-quart soup pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon. Cook for approximately 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bacon becomes crispy. Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon and transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate. Set aside. Carefully remove excess bacon grease from the pot, leaving approximately 1 tablespoon if needed for cooking the pepperoni.
  • Add the sliced pepperoni to the same pot. Cook over medium-high heat for approximately 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow the pepperoni to develop slightly crispy edges. Remove the pepperoni using a slotted spoon and set aside with the bacon.
  • Add 1 pound of ground Italian sausage to the pot. Cook over medium-high heat for approximately 5 to 7 minutes. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to break the sausage into smaller pieces as it cooks. Continue cooking until the sausage is browned and reaches an internal temperature of 160°F. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  • Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the sausage. Stir everything together. Cook for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften. The onions should become slightly translucent, and the peppers should remain tender with a little bite.
  • Pour in: 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, including the juices, 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce, and 2 cups beef bone broth. Stir until everything is combined.
  • Stir in: 2½ teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Mix thoroughly. Taste the broth and add the remaining tablespoon of sugar only if needed.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the soup to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Allow the soup to simmer uncovered for approximately 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. This allows the tomatoes, sausage, vegetables, and seasonings to blend together.
  • While the soup simmers, prepare: 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, Reserved crispy pepperoni, and Reserved crispy bacon. Divide the toppings evenly among the servings.
  • Ladle the hot soup into individual serving bowls. Top each bowl with: Crispy pepperoni, Crispy bacon, Shredded mozzarella cheese, and Grated Parmesan cheese. Allow the cheese to soften and melt slightly from the heat of the soup. For additional flavor, garnish with chopped parsley or crushed red pepper flakes. Serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

Crisp the Pepperoni Before Adding It to the Soup
One of the best things you can do for this recipe is cook the pepperoni separately before serving.
Heating the pepperoni releases some of its oils and intensifies its flavor.
It also gives the edges a slightly crispy texture.
If you add the pepperoni directly to the soup without cooking it first, you'll miss out on some of that texture and flavor.
Additional tips:
  1. Drain excess grease. Italian sausage, bacon, and pepperoni can release quite a bit of fat. Remove excess grease before adding the tomatoes and broth so the soup doesn't become overly oily.
  2. Use freshly shredded cheese. Freshly shredded mozzarella melts more smoothly than many packaged shredded cheeses.
  3. Don't overdo the sugar. Start with 1 tablespoon and taste the soup before adding more.
  4. Adjust the consistency. If you prefer a thicker soup, simmer it uncovered for an additional 5 to 10 minutes. For a thinner soup, add a little more beef broth.
  5. Add cheese when serving. For the best presentation, add the mozzarella and Parmesan directly to each bowl rather than mixing all the cheese into the pot.
