This Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joe is a bold and flavorful twist on the traditional comfort food classic. Instead of ground beef, it features tender ground chicken simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce that's infused with smoky, spicy Cajun seasoning. The sauce is thick, savory, and with just the right amount of heat, coating every bite of the juicy chicken.

Melted cheddar and mozzarella cheeses add a creamy layer that perfectly complements the spicy meat mixture. Served on a soft, lightly toasted hamburger bun, this sandwich is both hearty and satisfying. It's a messy, cheesy, flavor-packed meal that's perfect for weeknight dinners or game day indulgence.

Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joe vs Original Sloppy Joe

Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joe Vs Original Sloppy Joe
The Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joe puts a bold Southern spin on the beloved classic. While the Original Sloppy Joe features ground beef cooked in a sweet and tangy tomato-based sauce, the Cajun version swaps the beef for lean ground chicken and cranks up the flavor with spicy Cajun seasoning.

The original has a nostalgic, slightly sweet & tangy profile, often enhanced with ketchup, mustard, and a touch of brown sugar. In contrast, the Cajun Chicken version delivers a deeper savory flavor with a little kick, thanks to spices like paprika, cayenne, garlic, and onion powder. It’s less sweet and packed with layers of heat and richness.

To top it off, the Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joe often includes melted cheddar and mozzarella, adding a creamy, cheesy element that balances the spice. Both versions are messy, satisfying, and served on a soft toasted bun, but the Cajun take is for those who love bold flavor and a little southern heat in every bite.

  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • ½ cup Chicken Broth
  • ½ cup Cheddar Cheese
  • ¼ cup Mozzarella Cheese

  • Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet overmedium heat. Add the ground chicken and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it upwith a spoon as it cooks. Continue until the chicken is fully browned andcooked through.
  • Add chopped onion, chopped garlic, and diced bell pepper tothe skillet with the chicken. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes, until the vegetablesare soft and fragrant.

Recipe Tips

For extra flavor and a touch of heat, let the chicken mixture rest for a few minutes after simmering so the spices fully develop. You can also add a splash of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper if you like it spicier. Toasting the buns adds a slight crunch that helps hold up the saucy filling and keeps them from getting soggy.
